| Abstract | The present study aimed to examine the pattern of negative stereotypes among college students with respect to social group and gender. The study compared negative stereotypes held toward different social groups, explored gender differences in the expression of negative stereotypes, and analysed the interaction between social group and gender among undergraduate students. A total sample of 300 undergraduate students was selected from J.J. College, Gaya (Bihar), using a non-probability sampling technique. The Stereotype Scale developed by Tiwary and Kumar (2014) was used to collect data. Statistical analysis was carried out using descriptive statistics and t-tests to test the formulated hypotheses. The results revealed that there were no significant differences in negative stereotypes among students belonging to General, OBC, and SC/ST categories when compared across social groups. However, gender-wise analysis indicated that female students consistently scored higher on negative stereotype measures than male students across all social categories. Significant gender differences were observed, particularly among General and SC/ST category students, with females exhibiting higher levels of negative stereotyping. Although category-wise comparisons did not yield significant differences, the overall mean scores indicated a comparatively high level of negative stereotypes among undergraduate students. The findings suggest that while social group membership alone may not significantly influence negative stereotyping, gender plays a crucial role in shaping stereotypical attitudes among college students. The study highlights the need for educational interventions and awareness programs aimed at reducing negative stereotypes and promoting social equality within higher education institutions. Despite its limitations related to sample size and scope, the study contributes valuable insights into the understanding of stereotyping patterns among Indian college students. |
