Abstract Introduction: Breastfeeding is the first fundamental right to every child. It provides an unique and emotional basis for a healthier development of the child. Women need extra support, encouragement and reassurance while breastfeeding. Objectives: The objectives of the study are to evaluate the effect of individualized lactation counselling on maternal outcome and to evaluate the effect of individualized lactation counselling on neonatal outcome. Methodology: Quantitative approach with quasi experimental post-test only control design was used and the data was collected by Interview schedule, Observation checklist, Latch scale and Maternal Satisfaction Rating Scale from 50 primi mothers admitted in Government Medical College Hospital Kannur. Individualized lactation counselling is provided to mothers in the experimental group and routine care given to the control group. The data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Results: The result of the study shows that there is significant difference in the median maternal outcome among primigravida in the experimental and control group after individualized lactation counselling (for Latch scale score U=252, Z=2.257, p<0.001 and for maternal satisfaction rating scale, U=7.5, Z=6.165, p<0.05) and there is no significant difference in the median neonatal outcome scores among primigravida in experimental and control group after individualized lactation counselling (p>0.05). Conclusion: The study concluded that lactation counselling/ education is to be imparted to the primigravida women in the antenatal period and immediate postnatal period to adopt proper breastfeeding technique, prevent occurrence of breastfeeding problems and thus to promote successful breastfeeding. The findings have implications in nursing practice, nursing education, nursing administration and nursing research.
