Abstract Tourism has emerged as a major engine of economic growth for many developing regions, providing employment, foreign exchange earnings, infrastructural development, and socio-cultural revitalisation. West Bengal, with its diverse ecology, cultural heritage, historical richness, and strategic location, stands out as one of India’s key tourism destinations. This paper explores how tourism contributes to economic development in West Bengal, examining its impact on GDP, employment, infrastructure, revenue generation, environmental sustainability, and socio-cultural life. It also discusses policy initiatives, challenges, and future prospects for sustainable and inclusive tourism development in the state.
