Assessing the Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) Tourism in Sorsogon City

| Abstract | This research assessed the current status of Meeting, Incentives, Conventions, and Exhibitions (MICE) Tourism in Sorsogon City, through a descriptive cross-sectional method. The study managed to gather responses from 34 different establishment that participate in MICE tourism through survey questionnaires that resulted in a (46.57%) response rate from 73 identified establishments. This tourism sector consists of (21%) government facilities and 80% of private owned establishments, operating in the spun of 1 to 15 years, with over 15.000 seating capacity across the city. The survey shows that Infrastructure with the primary leading field of operation that functions in the city are mostly hotels and resort (79%) and convention centers (47%); the study also identifies that the most frequent types of event conducted in the city are Seminars and workshops with (65%), meetings with (62 %) and conferences and conventions with (38 %)of the time. Pricing tables also show common rates of meeting rooms and conference hall that ranges from PHP1,000 up to over PHP 200,000 which are the prices mostly applied and the discounts they offered. Tables also show that monthly income in the MICE establishments ranges from less than PHP 25,000 to PHP 250,000. The analysis of perceived challenges and opportunities reveals different factors that ranges from location and accessibility to local government support, economic stability and business climate and others with mean ratings that range 2.56 to 4.06. While analysis of Perceived Growth and Development Opportunities presents possible growth in the MICE sector in the city, such as development of modern function halls and convention centers, improvement of accommodation facilities, stronger government-private sector partnerships has mean ratings that ranges from 3 to 4.6. |
