| Abstract | Foreign trade plays a central role in economic development by facilitating the cross-border exchange of goods, services, capital, and technology. This paper examines the structure and significance of foreign trade through a comprehensive review of its components, classical and modern trade theories, institutional frameworks, and evolving policy responses, with a particular focus on the Indian context and the post-COVID-19 global economy. Using a systematic narrative review methodology, the study synthesizes insights from multilateral institutions such as the World Trade Organization, World Bank, International Monetary Fund, and UNCTAD, along with peer-reviewed economic literature. The findings highlight how trade specialization, economies of scale, and policy coordination contribute to growth, while also exposing vulnerabilities related to trade dependence, global shocks, and structural inequality. The paper concludes that foreign trade remains a powerful engine of growth but requires adaptive governance to ensure resilience, inclusivity, and long-term sustainability. |
