From Muga Silk to Joha Rice: Evaluating the Effectiveness of GI Protection Indications (GI) in Assam

| Abstract | Geographical Indication Protection is meant to maintain the distinctiveness of goods unique to a certain area, increase their market value, and sustain local lives. With its rich agro-cultural history, Assam has obtained GI ratings for a few traditional goods, including tea, bell metal crafts, horticultural crops, Muga silk, and Joha rice. This article assesses the efficacy of GI protection in Assam by looking at its effects on the economy, society, and law, with a focus on famous goods like Joha rice and Muga silk. The study examines whether GI certification has resulted in real advantages for producers, such as price increases, market access, brand awareness, and defense against abuse. It also examines issues such fragmented supply chains, inadequate enforcement, low knowledge among stakeholders, and the disconnect between registration and commercialization. The article illustrates the possibilities and constraints of GI protection as a strategy for rural development and cultural preservation in Assam by evaluating institutional support, policy frameworks, and ground-level results. The results indicate that whereas GI tags provide legal protection and symbolic recognition, their efficacy is dependent on smart marketing activities, producer empowerment, and coordinated governance. |
