The Role of Self-Compassion in Work Engagement and Mental Health among Nursing Professionals: A mini Review

Author(s) Swati, Dr. Amish
Country India
Abstract Nursing professionals are frequently exposed to high-stress environments, emotional exhaustion, and workload demands that adversely affect their mental health and work engagement. In recent years, self-compassion has emerged as a key psychological resource with the potential to buffer stress, enhance resilience, and promote overall well-being. This mini review synthesizes empirical findings on the role of self-compassion in enhancing work engagement and mental health among nursing professionals. Drawing from recent peer-reviewed studies, the review highlights how self-compassion contributes to reduced burnout, improved emotional regulation, and greater job satisfaction. Furthermore, it explores the mediating role of psychological capital and the moderating effects of supportive work environments. By promoting self-kindness, common humanity, and mindfulness, self-compassion serves as a protective factor against the psychological toll of care giving professions. This review underscores the importance of integrating self-compassion training into nursing education and organizational wellness programs to foster a more engaged, resilient, and mentally healthy nursing workforce.
