| Abstract | This study investigates the livelihood patterns and socio-cultural dynamics of the Paraja tribe of Laxmipur block of Koraput district of Odisha. The Parajas, one of the major tribal groups in South Odisha, have traditionally relied on agriculture, forest resources and animal husbandry for their livelihood. Based on primary and secondary data, this research examines the socio-economic changes and cultural shifts observed due to modernization, education and various developmental interventions. This research paper uses a fieldwork approach to analyse data collected from 250 respondents through structured interviews, observation and focus group discussions. The findings reveal that while traditional customs, rituals and community cohesion continue to define the essence of Paraja life, their socio-cultural fabric is gradually undergoing visible changes. Economic diversification, increased access to education, and exposure to modern lifestyles have contributed to changes in occupational structures and social relations. However, these changes also pose challenges to the continuity of tribal knowledge systems and cultural identities. This study highlights the ongoing dialogue between tribal traditions and modernity, providing insights into how tribal societies are adapting to socio-economic changes while striving to maintain their cultural integrity. |
