Author(s) Dr. Paramaa Raha

Abstract The present study was undertaken to investigate the different behavioural patterns of the Himalayan crestless porcupine, Hystrix brachyura in captivity. Observations were scheduled for a particular time span according to the convenience of the rescue centre authorities. Different components of behavioural activities recorded during the study were exploring, marking, resting, feeding, grooming and activities associated with mating. Defecation and urination at specific area within the enclosure signifies a marking zone which could provide a storehouse of information about identity, reproductive condition, age, health, and different emotional states of the individual porcupines. Grooming activity, generally carried out during their leisure time has been displayed by mutual licking of head and face. The different components of mating behaviour include following, contact, presenting, mounting and finally copulation. The study only provides a qualitative description of the observed behaviour. A 24-hour activity budget of the behavioural activities is a future plan of study for better management and improving the growth and breeding of the Himalayan crestless porcupine in captivity.
