Abstract Abstract
Background: AYUSH systems of medicine form an integral part of India’s healthcare framework; however, awareness regarding AYUSH educational opportunities among school students remains variable. Understanding students’ awareness is essential for informed career guidance and strengthening AYUSH workforce development.
Objective: To assess the level of awareness, perceptions, and career interest regarding AYUSH courses among higher secondary school students in Vedaranyam Taluk, Tamil Nadu.
Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among 400 higher secondary school students (Classes XI–XII) using a structured, bilingual (Tamil–English) questionnaire. Convenience sampling was employed. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and chi-square tests to assess associations between awareness levels and demographic variables. Statistical significance was set at p < 0.05.
Results: Of the 400 participants, 69% had heard about AYUSH courses, and 68% recognized AYUSH as a traditional system of medicine. Awareness of NEET as an entry requirement for AYUSH courses was reported by 48% of students. Although 70% expressed interest in learning more about AYUSH, only 46% considered it as a potential career option. Awareness regarding postgraduate and research opportunities was limited (38%). Private school students demonstrated slightly higher awareness in several domains compared to government school students.
Conclusion: While awareness and positive perceptions of AYUSH among higher secondary students are moderately high, translation into career aspiration remains limited. Strengthening school-level career counseling, targeted awareness programs, and early exposure to AYUSH education may help bridge the gap between knowledge and professional interest.
