| Abstract | Informal family caregivers are the primary source of support for individuals with mental health issues, yet in India’s collectivist society, caregiving is often considered a normative familial duty, which can obscure the emotional and psychological strain experienced by caregivers. As a result, distress among caregivers of individuals with neurotic disorders frequently remains under-recognized. This study aimed to assess the prevalence and severity of anxiety symptoms and caregiver burden among 235 informal family caregivers of individuals diagnosed with neurotic disorders in the Kamrup district using a cross-sectional quantitative research design. Anxiety severity was assessed using the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAM-A), and caregiver burden was measured using the Burden Assessment Scale (BAS). Descriptive statistical analysis revealed a high prevalence of caregiver burden, with 85% of caregivers reporting mild to severe burden. While the majority of caregivers reported symptoms in the low to mild anxiety range, a significant 17% experienced moderate to severe anxiety. These findings highlight that despite the cultural normalization of caregiving, caregivers experience substantial psychological strain, underscoring the urgent need for routine screening and targeted support interventions within the clinical framework. |
