ChatGPT and Generative AI as Emerging Threats to Academic Integrity: A Systematic Literature Review

Author(s) Prof. Dr. Alkaben Johnbhai Macwan, Ms. Nirali Piyushkumar Patel

Abstract The emergence of ChatGPT and other generative AI tools has reshaped academic practices while intensifying concerns about academic integrity. This systematic review, conducted using PRISMA 2020 guidelines, synthesises evidence from 17 peer-reviewed studies published between 2022 and 2025. Searches across Scopus, Web of Science, ERIC, IEEE Xplore, and Google Scholar identified 816 records, of which 17 met the inclusion criteria. Findings highlight five major threats: undisclosed AI-assisted work, plagiarism and contract cheating facilitated by generative models, authorship ambiguity, limitations of current detection systems, and insufficient or inconsistent institutional policies. Although generative AI offers educational benefits, studies consistently report that existing academic integrity mechanisms are not adequately equipped to address these emerging risks. The review underscores the need for stronger policy frameworks, assessment redesign, faculty preparedness, and AI literacy initiatives to ensure responsible use of generative AI in higher education.
