| Abstract | Background: Empty nest syndrome (ENS) is one of the unidentified and underrated reason for depression. Majority of parents in India are suffering from ENS. The mothers are affected more as they are the primary caretakers of children. Lack of knowledge regarding Empty Nest syndrome can lead to pre-depression and later to depression. Aim: This study aims to assess the planned teaching programme on level of understanding of empty nest syndrome and preventive measures in middle aged women residing in Melamcode ward at Trivandrum district. Theoretical framework adopted was modified Ernestine Wiedenbach’s helping art of clinical nursing theory. Methods: A Quantitative research approach with quasi-experimental one group pre-test post test design adopted with sample size of 50 middle aged women aged 40-65 years, selected through non-probability convenient random sampling technique. A structured knowledge questionnaire was used as data collection tool. Results: The collected data were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The study outcomes indicated that 34(68%) were having poor knowledge regarding ENS and its prevention, 15(30%) were having average knowledge and surprisingly only 1(2%) was having good knowledge regarding ENS and its prevention. The mean, mean % of pretest scores was 11.14, 37.3 respectively with SD 2.84 and for post test mean, mean % was 23.20, 78.2% with SD 3.06. No meaningful association was found in relation to awareness and baseline characteristics. Conclusion: The knowledge level assessment helps to identify how much awareness the middle aged mothers are having about ENS and its prevention. |
