Abstract This study has identified and explored the positive and negative effects of social media on high school and college students. It has highlighted that social media has a large impact on students' lives: this includes both positively and negatively. This research has emphasised that social media impacts students’ lives from their academics to their holistic wellbeing. Social media has developed significantly over time. It has become extremely prevalent in students’ lives, which has caused a large shift in their thought processes and what they view as being important. Social media has created new and unrealistic standards that teenagers feel that they need to meet. The findings in this paper contribute towards determining possible solutions and spreading awareness about the negative and detrimental impacts of social media on young students.
