Perception of Nurses Regarding Family Needs of Critically ill Patients Admitted in ICU in Selected Hospitals, Guwahati, Kamrup, Assam: A Descriptive Study

| Abstract | Introduction: When a patient is critically ill, their family members often experience emotional, physical and psychological stress. During this, family members have essential needs that need to be addressed to help them cope with situation and support in patient care effectively. The objectives were to assess the perception of nurses on family needs of critically ill patients and to find out the association between perception of nurses on family needs with their demographic variables. Methods: A descriptive study design was used and 100 ICU nurses were selected by purposive sampling technique in selected hospital, Guwahati, Assam. The data was collected by using demographic data questionnaire and Critical Care Family Inventory Needs (CCFNI), and analyzed in terms of descriptive and inferential statistics. Results: The result revealed that majority of the ICU nurses had average level of perception i.e. 63.0% and, that ICU nurses perceived “To know exactly what is done for the patient” (3.59±0.53) as most important need and “To be encourage to cry” (1.88±0.94) as the least important need. The result also showed that nurses ranked assurance (3.30±0.76) needs as the highest subscales of needs. Conclusion: The study findings revealed that there was no significant association between the perception of nurses regarding family needs with their selected demographic variables. |
