A case study on the effectiveness of mobilization with movement and TENS for cervical pain

| Abstract | Abstract Background: Everyday activities and quality of life can be greatly impacted by cervical pain, a common musculoskeletal disorder. To reduce pain and enhance function, conservative physiotherapy techniques like Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) and Mobilization with Movement (MWM) are commonly employed. Nevertheless, there is still little data on their combined effectiveness in specific clinical situations. Case Description: This case study describes the results of a patient who had limited range of motion and functional limitations due to chronic cervical pain. Over the course of a predetermined treatment period, the patient received a combination of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation and mobilization with movement techniques applied to the cervical spine. Intervention: A physiotherapist used MWM techniques and applied TENS to the cervical region. Over the course of two weeks, treatment sessions were held several times a week, along with patient education and recommendations for at-home exercise. Outcome Measures: A goniometer was used to measure cervical range of motion, and the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) was used to gauge pain intensity. Results: The patient showed a significant improvement in cervical range of motion, a decrease in functional disability, and a reduction in pain intensity after the intervention. These gains persisted at the follow-up, suggesting that the combined treatment strategy was effective. Conclusion: The results of this case study indicate that TENS and mobilization with movement may be useful in helping people with cervical pain feel less pain and have better function. To support these findings, more controlled research with bigger sample sizes is advised. |
