Women’s Literacy in India and Maharashtra: A Comparative Study Based on Census Data (2001–2011)

Abstract This paper examines the progress of women’s literacy in India and the state of Maharashtra over the decade from 2001 to 2011. By analyzing official population data, the study highlights key trends in urban and rural literacy rates, identifies persistent gaps, and suggests policy implications to bridge these divides. The findings reveal increase in literacy level the need for targeted stepping in, especially in rural areas.
