| Abstract | The Global Index of disease analysis highlights a substantially elevated risk of mortality and long-term complications among infants and children admitted to neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) and paediatric intensive care units (PICUs). The global burden of mortality in neonates remains critically high in low- and middle-income countries, where a significant proportion of newborn deaths result from conditions that are both preventable and treatable. Within the PICU environment, parents accompanying their critically ill children experience considerable psychological, emotional, and social strain, necessitating attention to their unique needs and challenges. Recognizing and addressing these needs is essential for delivering holistic, family-centred critical care. Against this backdrop, this study aims to examine and elucidate the experiences of mothers with children suffering from chronic illnesses in the PICU, to foster a more profound comprehension of the significance they attribute to these encounters. |
