Abstract Purpose: To investigate the sensitivity of the 30 m shuttle run and the SEMO agility test in distinguishing differences in the agility of players of two age groups, 16-18 and 20-22 years, in the sport of Sepak takraw.
Methods: Forty competitive players (20 in each group; mean age: younger = 17.1 ± 0.8 years; older = 21.2 ± 0.9 years) completed each test under standardised conditions. Group differences were determined using independent t-tests (α = 0.05) to measure the effect size, as calculated by Cohen's d.
Results: The results of the shuttle run test show a significant difference between groups (10.17 ± 0.48 in the 16-18 years age group and 9.52 ± 0.46 in the 20-22 years age group; t (38) = 4.35, p-value <0.001, effect size = 1.36), thus, significant discriminant validity exists. The results of the SEMO test are found to be non-significant (14.50 ± 2.80 in the 16-18 years age group and 15.66 ± 0.53 s in the 20-22 years age group.
Conclusion: The 30 m shuttle run test is more sensitive to age group performance in sepak takraw and can be used for talent search and performance analysis purposes.
