Dalit Aestheticism in Lal Singh Dil’s Memoirs Poet of the Revolution

Abstract Dalit aesthetics celebrates the struggle and revolt against the inhuman caste system, and advocates for the values of equality, liberty, and fraternity. On the other hand, mainstream Indian aesthetics celebrates imaginative works based on Sanskritic aesthetics, which aimed solely at achieving beauty and pleasure. It heavily depends on the theory of Rasas from Bharat Muni’s Natyashastra to evaluate the artistic value of a work, which determines its merit based on nine rasas: Sringar, Hasya, Karuna, Raudra, Vira, Bhayanaka, Adbhuta, Bhibhitsa, and Shanta Rasa. However, this framework of aesthetics is not sufficient to evaluate Dalit literature, because it does not include the rasas of suffering or cry, and revolt, which are essential elements in Dalit writings. Hence, Dalit writers and critics claim for the separate Dalit aesthetic and inclusion of suffering and revolt rasas in Rasa theory for equal and democratic evaluation. Therefore, in the present paper an attempt will be made to critically examine Lal Singh Dil’s memoirs Poet of the Revolution translated by Nirupama Dutt in the light of Dalit aestheticism; a theoretical framework propounded by Sharankumar Limbale and Omparkash Valmiki. The study will also explore the impact of caste and untouchability on Dil’s life which forced him to live life of indignity and suffering.
