Abstract Abstract
The rapid advancement of media and multimedia technology has significantly transformed the landscape of distance education across the globe. In India, the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) stands as a pioneer in integrating diverse media and multimedia tools to support Open and Distance Learning (ODL). This research paper examines the role, relevance, and effectiveness of media and multimedia technology in distance education with special reference to IGNOU. The study explores how print, audio, video, broadcast media, and digital platforms contribute to learner engagement, accessibility, flexibility, and quality enhancement in teaching–learning processes. Using a descriptive and analytical research design aligned with IGNOU’s ODL framework, the paper analyzes secondary data sourced from IGNOU reports, policy documents, research studies, and academic literature. The findings reveal that the strategic use of multimedia technologies such as eGyankosh, Gyan Darshan, Gyan Vani, SWAYAM, and online counseling has strengthened learner support services and improved educational outreach. The paper concludes that media and multimedia technologies play a crucial role in achieving IGNOU’s mandate of inclusive, flexible, and quality higher education.
