A Decentralized Blockchain-Based Framework for Secure and Trustworthy Data Exchange in IoT-Driven Smart Systems

| Abstract | Internet of Things (IoT) technologies constitute the foundation of contemporary smart systems, including healthcare monitoring platforms, intelligent campus infrastructures, and urban management solutions. While these systems enable real-time data-driven operations, they remain susceptible to security and trust challenges arising from centralized data control, constrained device capabilities, and limited accountability mechanisms. This paper introduces a decentralized blockchain-based framework aimed at securing IoT data exchange while ensuring integrity, transparency, and controlled access. The proposed framework integrates IoT gateways with a blockchain network in which smart contracts govern device authentication and data access policies. By storing cryptographic proofs rather than raw sensor data on the blockchain, the framework significantly reduces storage overhead while maintaining resistance to tampering. Security evaluation and performance analysis demonstrate that the proposed approach effectively mitigates unauthorized access, data manipulation, and trust-related vulnerabilities, making it suitable for large-scale deployment in future smart environments. |
