Abstract This study explored the lived experiences of graduates of the Alternative Learning System (ALS) in the municipalities of Barcelona, Bulusan, and Gubat, Sorsogon Province. The research sought to understand the personal and professional impacts of ALS on its graduates, the challenges they encountered, and the strategies they used to cope with societal stigma. It also aimed to determine the role of family and community support in helping learners complete the program and transition successfully into higher education or employment. Using a qualitative approach and descriptive phenomenological design, the study gathered data through in-depth interviews and focus group discussions with ALS graduates. Thematic content analysis was applied to identify and interpret recurring patterns and insights from the participants’ experiences.
Findings revealed twenty key themes, highlighting resilience, self-transformation, pursuit of lifelong learning, and adaptability as central to their success. Participants emphasized that the ALS program not only provided academic learning but also instilled valuable life skills such as perseverance, time management, humility, and creative problem-solving. These skills empowered them to overcome economic hardships and negative social perceptions. Results further showed that community and family support played a crucial role in maintaining motivation and confidence throughout their learning journey. The study concluded that the ALS program serves as a transformative educational pathway that promotes empowerment, personal growth, and better employment opportunities for marginalized individuals. It recommended enhancing the program through stronger family and community engagement, improved learner support services, and the inclusion of graduate insights to guide future learners toward academic success and lifelong development.
