Socio-Cultural Transformation in the Patalkot Valley: An Ethnographic Study of Development and Identity among Bharia Youth

| Abstract | The Bharia tribe of Patalkot, a Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group (PVTG) in Madhya Pradesh, is undergoing a profound socio-cultural metamorphosis driven by the state developmental interventions, specifically the Pradhan Mantri Janjati Adivasi Nyaya Maha Abhiyan (PM-JANMAN). This paper presents an ethnographic blueprint that analyzes the transition of Bharia youth from a secluded, forest-dependent existence to a market-integrated, digitally connected modernity. The study highlights the dual impact of infrastructure; while paved roads and concrete housing (PMAY) improve material quality of life, they simultaneously disrupt traditional ecological bonding and vernacular architecture. Livelihood patterns are shifting from shifting cultivation and ethnomedicine toward wage labor and migration, creating a new class of "rural proletariat." Furthermore, the research examines the cognitive reshaping of youth through formal education (EMRS) and mobile technology, leading to "self-fashioning," where traditional dialects (Bhariatti) and customs, such as bride price, are being replaced by Hindi and dowry systems. The paper concludes that the youth are navigating a hybrid identity, caught between "deculturation" and "aspirational modernity." It advocates for a balanced developmental policy that integrates Traditional Knowledge Systems (TKS) with modern education to preserve the unique Bharia heritage while ensuring economic empowerment. |
