Abstract The fast expansion of the Internet of Things (IoT) has significantly transformed residential contexts by promoting smart, connected home automation systems. IoT-driven smart home system facilitates remote monitoring, autonomous controlling and energy efficient utilisations by networking of diversified heterogeneous devices such as sensors, actuators, communication equipment, smart appliances and control units using wired-wireless links. Building on cloud computing, edge intelligence, and data-driven process scheduling, these systems substantially improve the comfort, safety, security and energy efficiency of residences.
In this paper, first, we provide an extensive and systematic review of IoT-based home automation systems including architectural frameworks, enabling hardware and software technologies, communication protocols, middleware platforms, as well as application domains. Recent innovative advances in intelligent automation systems, energy management and security mechanisms are addressed. Also, a systematic literature review concentrating only on peer-reviewed and validated journal papers is integrated to discover the cutting-edge techniques, compare statistics, and open issues that left uncovered research directions. The review also investigates a spectrum of open research directions and technological trends that may impact the next generation smart home ecosystem.
