Sociological Perspective On Families of Persons With Disabilities

Author(s) Dr. Shyamaraja. T

Abstract The World Health Organization defines disability as an umbrella term encompassing impairments, activity limitations, and participation restrictions. This definition conceptualizes disability as a multidimensional and socially mediated phenomenon rather than a purely medical condition. Disability arises from the interaction between individual bodily conditions and the social, cultural, and institutional environments in which individuals live. From a sociological perspective, disability is deeply embedded within structures of inequality, social norms, and power relations. Families of persons with disabilities play a critical role as caregivers, emotional supporters, and social intermediaries, yet they face distinct economic, psychological, and social challenges. This paper examines disability from a sociological viewpoint with specific emphasis on the lived experiences of families with persons with disabilities. It explores how social stigma, financial burden, psychological stress, lack of social acceptance, and inadequate institutional support shape family life. The paper argues for a rights-based, inclusive, and family-centered approach to disability policy and social intervention.
