| Abstract | The family is one of the most fundamental social institutions, playing a crucial role in the socialization, emotional support, and economic security of individuals. In traditional Indian society, especially in Karnataka, the joint family system was predominant for centuries. However, in recent decades, Karnataka has experienced rapid social transformation due to industrialization, urbanization, education, globalization, and technological advancement. These forces have significantly altered family structures, values, and relationships. This research article examines the changing family structure in Karnataka society from a sociological perspective. It analyses the transition from joint families to nuclear and extended families, explores the factors responsible for these changes, and studies their social consequences. The article also discusses the impact of these changes on women, children, and the elderly. The study is based on secondary sources such as books, census data, research articles, and government reports. The findings highlight that while the changing family structure has increased individual freedom and mobility, it has also weakened traditional support systems, creating new social challenges. |
