R K Narayan and the Vernacular World of Malgudi

| Abstract | Malgudi is not merely a background for R. K. Narayan’s stories; it is a dynamic cultural space that reflects regional traditions, social institutions, religious practices, linguistic habits and moral values rooted in South Indian society. Through Malgudi, R. K. Narayan translates the rhythms of vernacular life into English with remarkable ease and authenticity. His prose avoids exoticism and excessive explanation, allowing Indian culture to emerge naturally through everyday situations and human relationships. This research paper examines R.K. Narayan’s representation of the vernacular world of Malgudi and analyses how his fiction mediates regional culture for both Indian and global readers. Focusing on major works such as Swami and Friends, The Bachelor of Arts, The Guide and Malgudi Days, the study explores R. K. Narayan’s narrative style, language, characterization, humour and cultural realism. The paper argues that Narayan’s Malgudi novels establish a lasting model of cultural mediation in Indian English literature by presenting vernacular life as ordinary, humane and universally resonant. |
