Origin and Antiquity of Siddha System of Medicine – A Review

Abstract ABSTRACT
Siddha system is a traditional system of healing that originated in south India and is considered to be one of India’s oldest systems of medicine. The siddha system of medicine has been prevalent in the ancient Tamil land and is the foremost of all other medical systems in the world. Eighteen Siddhars are said to have contributed towards the development of this medical system. Agasthiyar is the prominent one among the eighteen and some of his works are still standard books of medicine and surgery in daily use among the Siddha Medical practitioners. They contribute not only to a system of medicine but also to the knowledge of eternity, alchemy, and yogic living. A speciality of Siddha system includes Kayakarpam, a special combination of medicine and life style, Varmam therapy, Vaasi (Pranayamam) and Muppu the universal salt. Various collections in this review revealed the origin, uniqueness and traditional way of Siddha in daily life were given in detail.
