| Abstract | The first 1,000 days of life—from conception to a child's second birthday—represent a critical window of opportunity for influencing lifelong health, development, and well-being. This period is increasingly recognized as pivotal for implementing strategies that integrate maternal health, early nutrition, responsive caregiving, and disease prevention. Evidence from global and national studies supports the efficacy of interventions targeting nutrition, healthcare access, and early childhood stimulation during this phase. This review explores the concept, rationale, and global relevance of the first 1,000 days strategy, highlighting its impact on brain development, epigenetic programming, long-term health outcomes, and socio-economic benefits. It also analyzes implementation approaches, program outcomes, challenges, and policy implications, particularly within low- and middle-income countries. Recognizing and investing in this window can yield significant dividends for individual potential and national development. |
