| Abstract | Warangal City in Telangana State, India, has experienced rapid urbanization over the past two decades, resulting in significant land use transformations and unplanned urban sprawl. This study employs a geo-informatics approach utilizing multi-temporal satellite imagery (Landsat and Sentinel-2) combined with geospatial analysis techniques to examine spatio-temporal patterns of urban sprawl and land use dynamics from 2000 to 2020. The research employs supervised classification, change detection analysis, landscape metrics, and urban growth modeling to quantify urban expansion patterns. Results indicate that the urban built-up area expanded by approximately 285% over two decades, while agricultural land declined by 42%, and forest vegetation decreased by 22%. Built-up area concentrated primarily along major transportation corridors and administrative boundaries. The study identifies critical hotspots of unplanned sprawl, particularly in the southern and eastern peripheries. Remote sensing indices, including Normalized Difference Built-up Index (NDBI) and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), were utilized to delineate land use changes with accuracy levels exceeding 89%. Temporal analysis reveals accelerated sprawl during 2010-2020 compared to 2000-2010. The research demonstrates the effectiveness of geo-informatics tools in capturing complex urban dynamics and provides evidence-based recommendations for implementing zoning regulations, green infrastructure development, and sustainable urban planning strategies in Warangal City and similar rapidly urbanizing Indian cities. |
