Abstract The general objective of This study is to analyze the impact of mobile phone usage on household budgets in the Manzau neighborhood. To achieve this objective analytical, quantitative and statistical methods were employed. Data collection relied on survey techniques, interviews and observation as well as non-probability sampling.
The survey results reveal that expenditures related to mobile phone use represent a significant share of the surveyed households’ budgets. These expenses have a negative impact on other essential budget items, particularly food and health, due to the prioritization given to communication-related costs.
To cope with this situation, households develop various coping strategies to control the costs associated with mobile phone use. However, these strategies often prove insufficient to fully offset the negative effects observed on their overall budget. The study thus highlights that excessive mobile phone use contributes to the increasing financial insecurity of households in the Manzau neighborhood, particularly those belonging to the most vulnerable categories. To mitigate the impact of mobile phone use on household budgets, it is recommended to establish a specific budget dedicated to communication expenses, prioritize face-to-face meeting with family and friends whenever possible, and conduct monthly monitoring of mobile phone-related expenses to identify areas for reduction.
Keywords Mobile phone, household ‘budget, communication expenses, economic vulnerability adaptation strategies, Manzau neighborhood.
