Women in Indian English Literature

Author(s) Ms Sukhdeep Kaur
Country India
Abstract Literature of any nation is the reflection of its history, value system, culture, traditions, rituals, social set up, beliefs, superstitions and gender issues. Literature and society are interconnected. Literature cannot be imagined to remain aloof from prevalent societal norms and circumstances. The role and position of women is the most discussed phenomenon. Ever since the conception of the earth, men and women have been acting according to the fixed standards. Men have always tried to dominate and suppress the women to prove their superiority. Women sometimes accepted this superiority and exploitation at the hands of men and suffered silently. But there came women who challenged the men by proving their caliber and capability in every field of action. In this awakening of women, women writers have played a vital role when they publically took up the gender issues. Being English an International Language, women writers writing in English have projected this struggle of Indian Women on international platform.
Keywords Women literature, genre, struggle, subjugation, gender roles, tarnish, stereotypes, self-realization, resistance, circumstances etc.
