| Abstract | Substance use disorder (SUD) is a complex mental health condition that affects an individual’s emotional, cognitive, and social functioning. Among the various psychological factors associated with SUD, guilt and shame play a significant role in shaping an individual’s self-concept and recovery process. Guilt is typically related to regret over specific behaviors, whereas shame involves negative evaluation of the self. These emotions can have both constructive and destructive influences on recovery. Moderate levels of guilt may promote responsibility and motivate individuals to seek change, while intense shame can reduce self-esteem, increase self-criticism, and weaken recovery motivation. Low self-esteem is commonly observed among individuals with SUD and may act as a barrier to sustained treatment engagement. This conceptual study explores the relationship between guilt, shame, self-esteem, and recovery motivation by reviewing existing psychological theories and empirical findings. Understanding how these emotional experiences interact can help mental health professionals design more effective therapeutic interventions, such as cognitive behavioral therapy and motivational enhancement strategies. Addressing maladaptive shame and promoting healthy guilt may strengthen self-esteem and enhance long-term recovery outcomes in individuals with substance use disorder |
