Impact of Globalization on Indian Public Administration

| Abstract | Globalisation has emerged as one of the most transformative forces in the contemporary world, influencing political, economic, social and administrative systems across nations. Indian public administration has also undergone significant structural, functional and behavioural changes under the influence of globalisation. The integration of the Indian economy with the global system since the early 1990s, along with liberalisation and privatisation, has reshaped the traditional bureaucratic framework. The role of public administration has shifted from being regulatory and control-oriented to being facilitative, transparent, accountable and citizen-centric. Globalisation has brought the influence of international organisations such as the World Bank, International Monetary Fund and World Trade Organization, which have contributed to administrative reforms and policy transformation in India. At the same time, globalisation has generated both opportunities and challenges. It has strengthened governance through technological adoption, decentralisation, public-private partnerships, good governance and e-governance initiatives. However, it has also increased inequality, administrative pressure, market-driven policy priorities and weakening of welfare orientation. This paper examines the historical development of Indian public administration after independence, the impact of globalisation on governance, recent international trends, and emerging challenges. The study adopts a descriptive and analytical approach and highlights the need for adaptive, inclusive and responsive administrative reforms in India. |
