Climate Vulnerability Analysis for Kerala's Backwater Island Communities

Author(s) Ms. RESHMI N, Ar. Dimple Maria

Abstract Kerala’s backwater islands are increasingly exposed to climate-induced hazards such as flooding, salinity intrusion, shoreline erosion, and land subsidence, raising concerns about long-term habitability and climate-induced migration. This study evaluates the vulnerability of selected islands—Munroe Thuruthu, Perumbalam, and Valiyaparamba—using secondary data analysis, environmental trend assessment (2014–2024), policy review, and comparative case studies. A thematic parameter matrix was developed to assess whether these settlements are following an adaptation-dominant or migration-dominant pathway. Findings indicate that although environmental stress is intensifying, migration remains gradual and largely economic, with the islands currently demonstrating adaptive capacity rather than collapse-driven displacement.
