Abstract The National Education Policy 2020 redefines mathematics education at the Grade 6 level by shifting the focus from rote memorization to conceptual understanding, reasoning, and problem-solving. Within the 5+3+3+4 curricular structure, Grades 6–8 constitute the Middle Stage, where learners develop abstract and logical thinking abilities. Mathematics teaching at this stage emphasizes exploration, real-life applications, activity-based learning, and the development of computational thinking as an essential life skill. The policy also advocates continuous and formative assessment to evaluate students’ understanding and application of concepts rather than relying solely on high-stakes examinations.
Aligned with this vision, the National Curriculum Framework 2023 presents mathematics as a joyful, creative, and meaningful discipline connected to learners’ everyday experiences. It promotes discussion-based learning, hands-on activities, interdisciplinary approaches, and inclusive practices to reduce mathematics-related anxiety. The framework further emphasizes competency-based assessment, focusing on reasoning, critical thinking, and the application of knowledge in real-world contexts.
