Indigenous Art and Craft of the Ramos of Arunachal Pradesh

Author(s) Tobi Riba
Country India
Abstract The Indigenous art and craft traditions of the Ramo tribe of Arunachal Pradesh reflect a sustainable knowledge system rooted in nature and community life. Primarily inhabiting the Menchuka region, the Ramos developed diverse crafts using locally available materials such as bamboo, cane, wood, clay, and gourds. These crafts fulfilled essential needs in agriculture, hunting, storage, weaving, and trade. Gender-based specialization shaped production patterns, with men engaged in bamboo and woodcraft and women in weaving. The study highlights the socio-cultural significance and economic role of traditional crafts, emphasizing their importance in preserving indigenous knowledge and identity.
