Abstract Historical experience of almost all economies shows that the share of the agriculture sector in the total employment and national income falls with the progress in economic development and growth over time. However, this decline does not diminish the need to address various challenges facing the agriculture sector from time to time because of several reasons. The foremost is the dependence of human life on food for survival. This dependence goes beyond survival to adequate nutrition for an active and healthy life. The other significant reasons for the continuing importance of agriculture is its role in supporting and improving rural livelihoods, maintaining agro ecological balance, mitigating climate change and global warming, and ensuring sustainable use of land, water and other natural resources.
