| Abstract | Over-the-Top (OTT), one of the most sought-after entertainment mediums, is extremely liberal in using substandard and abusive language. This has serious implications in the form of social impact on the audience, especially the younger generation. Massive exposure to strong language and misogynistic and vulgar expletives raises alarm bells about rising acceptance and tolerance among the general masses. The society has to bear the cost in terms of it being a demerit good with negative externalities. The research paper extensively discusses these issues, exploring the need and possibility of framing rules and guidelines to regulate and control the increasing use of vulgar language. The paper also surveys over 300 viewers of varied age groups to understand their responsiveness to the abusive language on the OTT, its social impact, and the need for regulation. |
