The Constitution of India as a Living and Dynamic Document

Author(s) Dr. JAYALAKSHMI DASARI
Country India
Abstract The Constitution of India is widely regarded as one of the most comprehensive constitutional frameworks in the world. Rather than functioning as a static legal document, it operates as a living constitutional order that evolves alongside societal transformation. Since its adoption in 1950, the Constitution has demonstrated remarkable adaptability through judicial interpretation, constitutional amendments, and democratic participation. This paper examines the concept of the “living Constitution” within the Indian context and explores how constitutional mechanisms enable institutional evolution while preserving foundational values. By analysing landmark Supreme Court judgments, major constitutional amendments, and contemporary governance challenges, the paper argues that the vitality of the Indian Constitution lies in its capacity to balance stability with reform.
