| Abstract | Population ageing and the increasing burden of non-communicable diseases have intensified the prevalence of multiple chronic conditions among elderly. This study examines the prevalence and socio-demographic determinants of single morbidity and multimorbidity among elderly individuals in India using data from the first wave of the Longitudinal Ageing Study in India (LASI), 2017–18. The analysis included individuals aged 60 years and above. Descriptive statistics and multivariate logistic regression models were employed to estimate prevalence and identify determinants of multimorbidity. Results show that 29.3% of elderly individuals reported single morbidity, while 16.6% experienced multimorbidity. The likelihood of multimorbidity increased with age and was significantly higher among urban residents, individuals with higher educational attainment, and those belonging to wealthier households. Conversely, currently working elderly individuals were less likely to report multimorbidity. Significant regional variations were also observed across states and union territories. The findings highlight the need for integrated and person-centered healthcare strategies to address the growing burden of chronic diseases among India’s ageing population. |
