Organic Agriculture and Its Role in Promoting Food Sustainability and Soil Fertility: A Narrative Review

Abstract The widespread and indiscriminate use of synthetic fertilizers has contributed to the degradation of soil quality, contamination of water resources, and disruption of beneficial soil microorganisms, ultimately resulting in reduced soil fertility and increased crop vulnerability. In response to these challenges, organic agriculture has emerged as a sustainable alternative that emphasizes the use of natural inputs, ecological processes, and locally adapted management practices. By integrating organic amendments, biological nutrient cycling, and biodiversity-based approaches, organic farming enhances soil structure, microbial activity, and overall agroecosystem resilience. Furthermore, it reduces dependence on external chemical inputs while promoting environmental sustainability and human health. With the growing global demand for safe and sustainably produced food, organic agriculture offers a viable pathway toward long-term food security and ecological balance. This review examines the fundamental principles and practices of organic farming, with particular emphasis on its role in improving soil fertility and advancing food sustainability.
