Abstract Abstract

Background:
Shushkakshipaka, classified under Sarvagata Netra Rogas in Ayurveda, is a Sadhya Vyadhi predominantly caused by the vitiation of Vata and Pitta Doshas. Its clinical manifestations—Gharsha (irritation), Toda (pricking sensation), Bheda (pain), Upadeha (discharge), Krichronmeelana (difficulty in opening eyes), and Ruksha-Daruna Vartma (dry and rough eyelids)—closely resemble the symptomatology of Digital Eye Strain (DES), a growing concern in the modern digital era.

Objective:
To propose an effective and patient-friendly Ayurvedic therapeutic approach for the management of Shushkakshipaka (Digital Eye Strain) using a modified formulation of Vibhitakadi Ghrita.

Methods:
Classical Ayurvedic management of Shushkakshipaka includes Snehapana, Nasya, Aschyotana, and Anjana, aimed at alleviating Vata-Pitta imbalance. Vibhitakadi Ghrita, referenced in Yogaratnakara, possesses Vata-Pittahara, Chakshushya, and Ropana properties. Considering the limited drug retention time in conventional Aschyotana, the formulation was modified into an ocular ointment by incorporating bee wax in a 1:6 ratio to enhance retention, bioavailability, and therapeutic efficacy.

Results:
The modified Vibhitakadi eye ointment is expected to provide prolonged ocular surface contact, improved drug absorption, and enhanced symptomatic relief compared to conventional tear substitutes, which offer only temporary relief.

Conclusion:
Vibhitakadi eye ointment represents a novel, economical, and patient-compliant therapeutic option for managing Shushkakshipaka (Digital Eye Strain). Its formulation addresses the limitations of existing treatments and aligns with Ayurvedic principles, suggesting potential for effective long-term management. Further clinical evaluation is recommended to validate its efficacy and safety.
