Eco-Tourism Development in Kerala: Opportunities and Challenges

Author(s) Ms. Reeba Susan Philip
Country India
Abstract Kerala, popularly known as “God’s Own Country,” offers excellent opportunities for eco-tourism due to its rich biodiversity, scenic landscapes, forests, and wildlife. Eco-tourism has emerged as a sustainable approach to tourism development, focusing on environmental conservation, community participation, and economic benefits. This study examines the opportunities and challenges related to eco-tourism in the state. The research highlights the role of government initiatives, local community involvement, and sustainable practices in promoting eco-tourism. However, the sector also faces challenges such as environmental degradation, inadequate infrastructure, lack of awareness among tourists, and poor waste management practices. The research is based on secondary data to analyze current trends and issues. The study concludes that while eco-tourism can contribute to sustainable economic development, effective planning, awareness programs, and strict environmental regulations are essential to ensure its long-term success
