| Abstract | Tamil cinema has always presented violence in one way or another, either in a stylized action or realistic form. Unlike other commercial movies, Visaranai, a film by Vetrimaaran, is a rough and outrageous portrayal of police brutality and institutionalized violence. The movie is not glorifying violence but shedding light on the harsh realities of people under the extremes of the justice system. The current paper will be devoted to the attitude of the audiences to the violence in Visaranai and its influence on their social consciousness. The qualitative research methodology is also used, where the responses will be collected in the form of interview and general discussion to ensure personal interpretations and emotional reactions. The paper is guided by the Perception Theory proposed by J. J.Gibson (1979) that explains how individuals perceive visual objects based on their immediate environment and past experiences. The findings reveal that the film is an emotionally moving one, evoking a feeling of discomfort, empathy, and thinking. It is also useful in creating awareness of the phenomenon of institutional violence, though it is understood differently depending on viewers. The paper concludes that realistic images of violence in film can influence the perception of the individuals and can make them have more interest in social facts. |
