| Abstract | Abstract Introduction: Occupational stress adversely affects the performance of nursing educators. Emotional intelligence (EI) may act as a protective factor that enhances coping and improves work performance. This study examined the mediating role of emotional intelligence between occupational stress and work performance among nursing teachers. Methods: A correlational study was conducted among 621 nursing teachers from selected colleges in Madurai using convenient sampling. Data were collected through online self-administered questionnaires. Standardized tools included the Nurses’ Occupational Stressors Scale (NOSS), Emotional Intelligence Scale (EI-PcSc), and Work Performance Scale. Data were analyzed using Pearson correlation, regression, mediation analysis, and t-tests. Results: Occupational stress showed a negative correlation with work performance (r = -0.162) and emotional intelligence (r = -0.127). Emotional intelligence demonstrated a positive correlation with work performance (r = 0.262). Mediation analysis indicated that emotional intelligence partially mediates the relationship between occupational stress and work performance. Demographic variables such as age and experience were significantly associated with emotional intelligence and performance. Discussion: Emotional intelligence plays a crucial role in mitigating the negative effects of occupational stress on performance. Enhancing EI through training and implementing stress management strategies can improve the well-being and professional effectiveness of nursing educators. |
