Psychological and Academic Challenges During the Transition to University Among Students in War-Affected Middle Eastern Contexts: A Cross-Sectional Survey

Abstract The transition from high school to university involves significant academic, social, and psychological adjustments, including adapting to new curricula, heavier workloads, unfamiliar subjects, and increased expectations for self-directed learning. Many students also relocate away from home, necessitating new social connections and independence, which can contribute to elevated stress and anxiety. In Middle Eastern contexts such as Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, the United Arab Emirates, and Kuwait, these challenges are intensified by diverse and internationalized educational environments. Additionally, in regions affected by ongoing geopolitical tensions, disruptions in schooling and exam uncertainty further exacerbate psychological strain among students. First-year university students in these areas face compounded stressors arising from both academic transitions and exposure to conflict, increasing their risk of poor mental health outcomes. This study examines psychological well-being, specifically anxiety and stress, alongside academic adjustment among high school and first-year university students in the Middle East, with a focus on the association between war‑related experiences and transitional outcomes.
