Abstract Goa tourism analysis tourism is an important economic driver for coastal regions and particularly in Goa where it provides a major source of foreign exchange, employment and household income. However recent trend indicates that there has been a structural change in the tourism sector in Goa with declining international arrivals of tourists despite domestic arrival numbers continuing to grow. This study adopts a theoretical approach to examine the causes of this transformation and its economic implications. The results show that rising costs, infrastructure constraints, environment degradation and competition from other destination sites in south east asia have all contributed to a reduction in goa’s global competitiveness. While total tourist arrival numbers remain high the loss of high spending foreign tourists pose challenge for sustainable economic development. Policy options such as sustainable tourism, infrastructure development and strategies for diversion are recommended.
