The Narrow Repertoire of Mythology in Kathak: Tradition, Curriculum, and the Absence of Innovation

Author(s) Ms. Tanishka mudgal
Country India
Abstract Kathak, a classical Indian dance form originating from northern India, has long incorporated elements of Indian mythology, yet its use remains limited to a select group of narratives such as Draupadi’s disrobing, Sita’s abduction, Krishna’s Makhan Chori, and Krishna Leela. This paper critically examines the reasons behind the repetitive use of these themes in Kathak performances. It explores how institutional curriculum, traditional frameworks, and historical gatekeeping contribute to restricting choreographic innovation, particularly within academic settings. Drawing on perspectives from dance historiography and cultural studies, the study argues for a broader engagement with the vast spectrum of Indian mythology to revitalize Kathak as a dynamic and evolving art form.
